The 1970s

For this track Episode One had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Garrett Shider; current member of pioneering 70s Funk band Parliament Funkadelic, and son of one of the bands founding members Starchild. Inspired by Garrett’s inherited Funk instincts with the guitar and bass, the group created a Hip Hop/Funk fusion energised by the sounds of the decade that began with the popularisation of Funk and ended with the birth of Hip Hop.
Funk is a music genre that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century. James Brown's development of a signature groove that emphasised the first beat of every measure was key and when this was combined with rock and psychedelia-influenced by musicians such as Sly and the Family Stone and Jimi Hendrix, Funk was born. Bands like Parliament-Funkadelic began to adopt and develop Brown's innovations during the 1970s and forged their own unique paths, in turn going on to influence others. Funk derivatives include G-funk, a mix of gangsta rap and funk which began in California in the early 90s, while Funk samples and breakbeats have been used extensively in hip hop and electronic dance music.
