about

The 1980s

For this track Episode One used sounds from electronic keyboards which became affordable for many people during the 80s. The heavily processed drum sound was made iconic by artists such as Phil Collins and Kate Bush during this decade and is synonymous with the music of this time. The style and sound of Easy’s verse was inspired by artists such as Morrissey and The Cure who brought a new melancholy style of pop music which was central to some of the decade’s sub-cultures.

In the 80s, audio synthesisers became far more affordable and accessible to the average musician. Models such as the Yamaha DX7 became as common as guitars during the 80s. Along with synthesisers came drum machines. The DMX and the Linn Drum machines suddenly made it so that anyone could program a beat in their own time and then play over it, giving people who couldn’t play a chance to do something new and different opening up the market to a whole host of new musicians who wanted to be heard. These and other advances in electronic and computer based composition completely changed the landscape of music, not only for huge global megastars such as the band Fleetwood Mac, but for independent musicians making music in their own homes.
