about

The 1960s

Taking inspiration from bands such as The Doors, The Animals and The Beatles, Episode One used software emulations of iconic 60s instruments and recording technology found at studios like Abbey Road which became household names for recordings made during that decade. Episode One studied rhythms and aesthetics made popular during the 60s and adapted them to work with their own sensibilities. Until recently this sound would have been all but unachievable to any artist that could not access the physical kit, but 21st century evolutions in digital technology have made recreating this sound a much more realistic prospect.

Rock 'n' roll had spread from the US to the UK and marked the arrival of youth rebellion in the 'teenager'. Music from now on would always come with a hint of rebellion. It was said that the fifties ended on the 3rd February 1959—dubbed as 'The Day the Music Died'—marking the death of three musicians, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J P "The Big Bopper" Richardson, in a plane crash. This day began a whole new chapter for the youth of the 1960s. Inspired by the sounds of African American rock 'n' roll artists, young British musicians were getting back to its origins and so came a new wave of folk and pure R&B revivals—styles suited to a decade of political protest.
Singers Bob Dylan and Joan Baez led the movement, and Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" (1962) became a civil rights anthem. Music had become a vehicle for social change. The protest songs and psychedelia of the 1960s were the soundtracks to a sexual revolution and anti-war marches.
